Rexer Analytics' Data Mining Survey
Here's your chance to have an impact on the general data
mining community and share your evaluation of all the DM tools you use,
including of course, SQL Server Data Mining. Rexer Analytics is doing their
third
annual DM survey and it's closing soon. Highlights from past surveys:
-
Half of data miners indicate their results are helping
to drive strategic decisions and operational processes.
-
The most commonly used algorithms are decision trees,
regression, and cluster analysis. Usage of time series is increasing.
-
Data miners spend only 20% of their time on actual
modeling. More than a third of their time is spent accessing and preparing
data.
-
In selecting their analytic software, data miners place
a high value on dependability, the ability to handle very large datasets,
and quality output.
-
The most prevalent concerns about data mining
utilization are: resistance to using data mining in contexts where it would
be beneficial, insufficient training of some data miners, and lack of model
refreshing.
Sound familiar? Go
take the
survey now to uphold (or disprove) these findings.

SQL Server 2008 Released to Manufacturing: What's New for
DM
SQL Server 2008 was
released to manufacturing in mid-August and should be making its way to you
soon. If you're an MSDN subscriber, you should already be able to download
your copy. For everyone else, the
180-day
evaluation of SQL Server Enterprise is available for download so you can
start exploring the final bits right away.
Here's a recap of what's new for Data Mining in SQL Server
2008:
-
The
Microsoft_Time_Series algorithm has been enhanced to include
ARIMA in addition to the existing
ARTxp
method, and a blending algorithm is now used to deliver more accurate and stable
predictions, both short and long term, from a hybrid model. In addition, a new
prediction mode allows you to add new data to time series models. (See
below for
a neat app that will let you explore these features.)
-
Built-in support for holdout has been added. You can easily partition your data
into training and test sets that are stored in the mining structure and are
available to query after processing.
-
You can now build mining models on filtered subsets of a mining structure's data
(e.g. just male customers), which means that you no longer have to create
multiple mining structures and re-read the source data for such variations over
a dataset.
-
Drillthrough functionality has been extended to make all mining structure
columns available, not just columns included in the model. This allows you to
build more compact models without sacrificing the ability to producing
actionable output reports like targeted mailing lists.
-
The much-requested
cross-validation feature has been added, allowing users to quickly validate
their modeling approach by automatically building temporary models and
evaluating accuracy measures across K folds. The feature is available through a
new cross-validation tab under Accuracy Charts in Business Intelligence
Development Studio, in addition to being accessible programmatically via a
stored procedure call.
And of course, the final bits of the updated DM Add-ins for
Office 2007 are also available as a
free download. The
SQL Server 2008 version includes two new Table Analysis tasks (Prediction
Calculator and Shopping Basket Analysis) and support for all the new DM server
features listed above in the DM Client add-in for Excel.
Here's a full feature list.
Enjoy! And please
post your comments and questions to the
Data Mining forum.
SQL Server Cloud Data Mining Makes its Debut at KDD-2008
The SQL Server Data Mining team unveiled a technology preview of Table Analysis Tools for the
Cloud at the KDD-2008 conference in Las
Vegas Aug 24-27. The preview includes both a thin-client version (no
installation required) and an Excel add-in that provides all the
functionality of the SQL Server 2008 Table Analysis Tools for Excel 2007, but
with no server needed - the hosted SQL Server Data Mining Service in the
cloud does the crunching instead.
Visit
http://www.sqlserverdatamining.com/cloud/ to learn more (via a cool
Silverlight demo), download the Excel add-in or explore Cloud Data Mining in your browser
- with your own data. Also, don't forget to check out this
excellent SQLServerPedia article where Brent Ozar shows you how to use the
service to analyze Perfmon data. And finally, you can get fresh updates straight
from the service's architect on DM(X),
Bogdan Crivat's blog.
Explore Time Series Enhancements in SQL 2008 with New
Sample
SQL Server 2008 has
powerful new Time Series features that you will definitely want to explore and
put to use.
Shuvro and
Tatyana from the SQL Server Data Mining dev team have put together
a great sample app to help you get up to speed. The tool features
readily-accessible time series data, an easy-to-use interface to model and play

SQL Server Data Mining Rocks KDD 2006
SQL Server Data Mining had an unusually flamboyant presence
at the top data mining conference held in Philadelphia in August this year. The
development team has been a regular exhibitor at the ACM Knowledge Discovery and
Data Mining (KDD) conference over the past few years, showing off the different
facets of the SQL Server Data Mining platform as it was being developed. This
time around, in addition to showing the finished product now shipping as part of
SQL Server 2005, the team made a splash by offering attendees live demos of the
upcoming Office 2007 Data Mining Add-ins. To top it all, booth visitors also
received numbered "Data Mining Rocks" T-shirts with a lucky wearer (name
withheld to protect the innocent) snagging a complete Xbox 360 system at a

Predicting Home Sales with
SQL 2005 DM
Sci-Tech Today features
an
article that describes a project in the works at Long & Foster Real
Estate Inc. that will "boost its housing sales and win new listings" using the
OLAP and DM capabilities in SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services. The system will
use data mining to "determine the likelihood of a house selling in 30,60 or 90
days" and integrate the results into its operational flow by using Reporting
Services to "provide its real estate agents with near-real-time BI reports
showing the likelihood that a home will sell based on the interest it generates
on the company's Web site".
SQLServerDataMining.com

We would like to encourage you to post your questions and share your insights
with the SQL Server Data Mining community on the
Data Mining MSDN forum. The MSDN forum offers several advantages including
immediately visible responses, the ability to update previous posts, rich text
editing, alerts and most importantly, *no spam*.
Forecasting on the Fly with SQL Data Mining and Reporting Services
TechNet recently featured an excellent
article excerpted from the book "Applied Microsoft Analysis Services" by Teo
Lachev. "Implementing
Smart Reports with the Microsoft Business Intelligence Platform" shows you
two ways to leverage SQL Server Data Mining to author "smart" reports. The Sales
Forecast report is particularly interesting - it builds a temporary
"session" mining model using the Microsoft Time Series algorithm to generate the
forecast.
Yet Another DM Webcast
A new entry has been added to the growing collection of
data mining
webcasts presented by the SQL Server Data Mining team - check out the
replay of Raman Iyer's Feb 16, 2006 live TechNet webcast "Introduction
to Data Mining with SQL Server 2005".
This is a
good one to share with folks curious about the possibilities of data mining and

November 2005
|
Welcome to
the November 2005 issue of 'The Data Miner' - the official newsletter of SQL Server
Data Mining. This periodic newsletter keeps you up-to-date with the latest
happenings in the SQL Server Data Mining world and gives you useful tips to
help you get the most from SQL Server Data Mining.
In This Issue
(click topic to go directly to it):
SQL Server 2005
Is READY!
Yup, it's OFFICIAL! SQL Server 2005 was released to
manufacturing at the end of October and it was officially launched on November 7
in San Francisco.
The SQL Server Data Mining team would like to take this
opportunity to thank all of you folks - our early adopters - for your
support and feedback. You helped us ship a world-class product that we're really
proud of, one that we know will change the face of the data mining industry.
The final product will be making its way to the retail
channel
over the next couple of months, but it's already available for
immediate download to MSDN subscribers. There will be scores of additional
launch events in cities across the US and the rest of the world over the next
month, so you can try and catch one of those if you weren't able to make it to SFO.
For more information about the SQL Server 2005 launch, visit
www.microsoft.com/sql.
Zen And The Art Of Clustering
Sure, implementing a good clustering algorithm can be an art
but we've taken clustering to a whole new aesthetic level. Check out the new
live sample "The
Art Of Clustering" at SQLServerDataMining.com - it lets you draw your own
elliptical clusters and play with various algorithm parameters to see how the
Microsoft Clustering algorithm works. As a side benefit, you also get to
generate some cool artwork for your office walls. Give it a shot.
Plug Into SQL Server Data Mining
SQL Server 2005 Data Mining has an extensible framework that
allows independent software developers to easily integrate new data mining
algorithms and viewers into the product. The product team has provided in-depth
technical articles, tutorials as well as sample source code for building
"plug-in" algorithms and viewers. What was missing was a high-level overview of
the technology that explains the benefits and overall architecture. We bring you
a
sneak preview of an upcoming MSDN article by Raman Iyer called "Plugging Into SQL Server
Data Mining" that fills this gap.
Mining The Flow
This month's
SQL Server Standard magazine
features an article by Jamie MacLennan that shows you how to use transforms in
SQL Server 2005 Integration Services to perform data mining operations directly
in your operational data flow.
Data Mining Components In SQL Server 2005 Feature Pack Download
The first SQL Server 2005 Feature Pack is now available for
free download
here. Data Mining users might find the following redistributables useful:
-
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Datamining
Viewer Controls - these are the Winform controls for the DM
viewers in Business Intelligence Development Studio and SQL Management
Studio. You can now embed them in your own applications!
-
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis
Services 9.0 OLE DB Provider - you
can use this to install just the AS 2005 OLE DB provider and build local
mining models on client machines. Note that MSXML6 (a link for the download
is available on the same page) is a prerequisite for the provider.
SQL Server 2005 FAQ At SQLServerDataMining.Com
You can now direct friends, colleagues and customers
curious about data mining in SQL Server 2005 to the updated
FAQ
section at SQLServerDataMining.com - it has been refreshed with a new set of
starter questions (and answers) for the SQL Server 2005 launch. The existing SQL
Server 2000 FAQ has been moved to the SQL Server 2000 DM section.
PDC

SQL Server Data
Mining News |
April 2005

Welcome to
the April 2005 issue of 'The Data Miner' - the official newsletter of SQL Server
Data Mining. This periodic newsletter keeps you up-to-date with the latest
happenings in the SQL Server Data Mining world and gives you useful tips to
help you get the most from SQL Server Data Mining.
In This Issue
(click topic to go directly to it):
SQL Server Data Mining Wins New Converts in Denmark
Data Mining engine development lead and evangelist-at-large
Jamie MacLennan recently returned from a trip to Copenhagen at the invitation of
the Microsoft Denmark office. What was initially supposed to be a half-day
training session for a few customers interested in learning about SQL Server
2005 Data Mining turned into a full-fledged two-day bootcamp at a dedicated
training center with about 20 people from 11 different companies.
In addition to the obvious advantages of cost, ease of use
and the platform approach, many of the attendees were impressed with the idea of
Total Model Lifetime Management - the SQL Server Data Mining
philosophy that data mining does not end when an analyst completes and verifies
a mining model: it continues on to the operationalization of the model and with
the sustained management and maintenance of the model. This is an idea that's so
familiar in the database arena and yet, completely alien to the data mining
world (prior to SQL Server Data Mining).
Several of the Danish "bootcampers" intend to move to SQL
Server 2005 Data Mining immediately, replacing expensive licenses that they
currently have for other data mining technologies.
Here's a translated
version of an upcoming article on SQL Server 2005 Data Mining in Microsoft
Denmark's magazine "Momentum" that includes insightful comments from some of
these early adopters.
SQL 2005 Data Mining Programming Article on MSDN
You know how we keep harping on the fact that SQL Server 2005
Data Mining is a platform? You'll understand why when you check out "SQL
Server Data Mining Programmability", an in-depth article by SQL Data Mining
engine developer Bogdan Crivat that covers the myriad ways you can access SQL
Server 2005 Data Mining programmatically. Bogdan not only walks you through all
the server and client APIs, including XMLA, DMX, ADOMD.NET, AMO and OLE DB, he
also delves into various data mining application scenarios. Folks, this is
essential reading if you want to write any type of DM application on SQL Server
2005!
Apollo Data Tech Launches Predictive Analytics Solution Based on SQL Server 2005 DM
In a press release earlier this month, Apollo Data
Technologies (www.apollodatatech.com)
announced their "Predictive Analytics solution that goes well beyond
difficult-to-use, off-the-shelf statistical software packages". One of the
deployments highlighted in the release was a predictive model built for
The Seattle Times Company using SQL Server 2005 Data Mining. The model enables
behavioral targeting and customer segmentation for direct marketing to new and
existing customers -- customers were segmented by news and information
consumption, as well as other data demographics.

Plugging Into SQL Server 2005 Data Mining
SQL Server 2005 Data Mining offers an extensible platform
that lets third parties add their own data mining algorithms to our server.
By implementing a small set of interfaces, third-party developers can write
plug-in algorithms that look exactly like native Microsoft algorithms to data
mining application developers as well as to end users. Plug-in algorithms can
take advantage of all the server infrastructure, including storage, security,
multi-user training and querying capabilities as well the design, deployment and
management tools included with SQL Server 2005.
The plug-in architecture for data mining in SQL Server 2005
includes a mechanism for third parties to either re-use one of the built-in
Microsoft viewers for their plug-in algorithms or register their own custom
plug-in viewers for visualizing their trained model content.
Deep integration with OLAP and other SQL Server 2005
components like Integration Services and Reporting Services is another advantage
that comes at zero development cost for ISVs.
The SQL Server Data Mining team has put together several
resources to help third party developers succeed with their plug-in algorithm
implementations:
SQL Server Magazine Features
"Data Mining Reloaded"
Check out
"Data Mining Reloaded", an article by SQL Data Mining Research team members
Alexei Bocharov and Jesper Lind that gives you a broad overview of all the cool,
new data mining features in SQL Server 2005.
Multiple Data
Mining Customers Visit The SQL Customer Lab
In the past month, the SQL Lab hosted three customers who
visited Microsoft with SQL Server Data Mining as either their primary agenda or
part of it. The product team helped these beta customers understand new features
and to boost performance - in one case by 6000% - by tweaking their queries to
take advantage of new SQL 2005 DMX language features and by making product
changes. Applications being developed by these customers include:
- cross-sell using the Microsoft_Decision_Trees and
Microsoft_Association_Rules algorithms
- a data mining score card using the
Microsoft_Neural_Network algorithm
- a plug-in algorithm in collaboration with Microsoft
Research (see the lead article in this newsletter about plugging into SQL
Server 2005 DM)
What's New In The
Upcoming SQL 2005 Community Technology Preview
There will be an updated Community Technology Preview version
of SQL Server 2005 available to beta customers this month. Look for the
following SQL Server Data Mining updates in this drop:
- New DMX syntax for creating mining structures (CREATE
MINING STRUCTURE) and adding models to existing mining structures (ALTER
MINING STRUCTURE ADD MINING MODEL)
- Two new algorithms: Microsoft_Linear_Regression and Microsoft_Logistic_Regression;
these algorithms are specializations of the Microsoft_Decision_Trees and
Microsoft_Neural_Networks algorithms respectively that were determined by
customer feedback to be important enough to call out explicitly.
- Updates to plug-in interfaces; plug-in algorithm
developers should note that they will need to consume the updated
definitions in the dmalgo.h header file and recompile their code
Data Validation Source Code Now Available
Data validation is another non-obvious application of data
mining that forms developers will find a useful addition to their toolset. A
sample SQL Server Data Mining web application has been available in the
Live!Samples section of SQLServerDataMining.com for a while. We have now made
the source code and the associated PMML model available as well in the
Downloads
section.

Volume 1, Issue 3
December 2004
|
Welcome to
the December issue of 'The Data Miner' - the official newsletter of SQL Server
Data Mining. This periodic newsletter keeps you up-to-date with the latest
happenings in the SQL Server Data Mining world and gives you useful tips to
help you get the most from SQL Server Data Mining.
Data Mining Helps in
Researchers’ Hunt for HIV Vaccine
The Centre for Clinical Immunology and Biomedical Statistics
at Murdoch University Perth and Microsoft Research have created a graphical
visualization (a dependency network) of associations between the human immune
system and HIV sequences. These associations are useful for identifying
vulnerabilities in the HIV virus which may lead to drug treatments and/or a
vaccine for the virus. The dependency network shown below highlights the
associations between a particular immune system type (B5701) and mutations of
the virus at amino-acid positions Nef9 and Nef116. These associations suggest
that this part of the virus is attacked by the immune system of people with this
type.

associations between human immune system and HIV sequences
The dependency network technology from Microsoft Research is
available in SQL Server 2005 Data Mining.
SQL
2005 Data Mining Talks on PASS Community Summit CD
The 2004 PASS Community CD-ROM, available at
www.sqlpass.org, features two talks on SQL
Server 2005 Data Mining:
In "DTS and Data Mining: Expanding Capabilities with
Analytics", Donald Farmer and Jamie MacLennan from the Microsoft SQL Server team
talk about the close integration between SQL Server Integration Services
(formerly DTS) and Data Mining in SQL Server 2005.
In the second part of the three-part talk "The Complete,
Integrated, End-to-End BI platform: How It's Done in SQL Server 2005", Ariel Netz
from the Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services team delves into the exciting new data
mining features in Analysis Services 2005.
MovieClick Dataset Available on SQLServerDataMining.com
Many of you have been playing with the live MovieClick demo
on SQLServerDataMining.com. The underlying data set is now publicly available as
well, so you can build your own models on it. Feel free to
download and mine to your heart's content.
Thin Mining With XML for Analysis
SQL Server 2005 Data Mining is of course an excellent
platform for building rich client applications, but if you want a zero-footprint
data mining app, that's easy to accomplish as well. XML for Analysis (XMLA)
is now the native protocol for Analysis Services 2005, so you can directly send
your data mining prediction statements wrapped in a XMLA request from your web
application without requiring additional client components like OLE DB or the
XMLA SDK. The all-new XMLA ThinMiner application, now
live on SQLServerDataMining.com, demonstrates this effectively. XMLA
ThinMiner shows you the XMLA request it generates when you issue a prediction
query, as well as the raw XMLA response returned by the server.

SQL Server 2005
Data Mining at KDD-2004
SQL Server 2005 Data
Mining made a big splash at KDD-2004, the premier data mining conference
organized by the ACM's SIG KDD (Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining). KDD was
held Aug 22-25 in Seattle
this year.
Jamie MacLennan, development lead for SQL Server Data
Mining, gave a well-received invited talk on Data Mining standards on the first
day of the conference. Microsoft researcher David Heckerman's keynote on
"Graphical Models for Data Mining" on the third day was an
unqualified success, with many attendees rating it one of the best-ever
KDD keynote talks. Heckerman's MLAS (Machine Learning and Applied Statistics)
team at Microsoft Research is one of the key collaborators of the SQL Server
Data Mining product team, contributing the Time Series and Sequence Clustering
algorithms as well as the dependency network and other viewers to SQL Server
2005.
We had the busiest
booth by far in the exhibition area. The booth had six machines set up with
tutorials and demo applications that visitors could use to explore SQL Server
2005 Data Mining. Most of the
research and industry experts who received demos of SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 Data
Mining capabilities offered glowing feedback about the product.

Team members demo SQL Server 2005 Data Mining to
conference attendees
SPSS in Our Corner
SPSS, the
world’s second largest data mining software vendor, was in the SQL Server
2005 Data Mining booth showing off their algorithms and viewers integrated into
the Beta 2 edition of Analysis Server 2005 and Business Intelligence
Development Studio respectively. This was a testament to the extensibility
designed into the SQL Server Data Mining platform and it evoked a lot of
excitement both from business customers and other vendors exhibiting at KDD.
